Lip makeup is one of the most fun and beautiful things you can put on your face. But let’s face it, it is also one hell of a commitment. Glosses invariably get hair stuck to them, and any kind of lipstick, whether traditional or liquid, requires a heightened sense of awareness all day. Woe betide you if you forget you are wearing that killer red, and smear it halfway across your face at lunch.
Making a day a “Red Lip Day” therefore must always be a conscious decision in the morning. Somewhat like the decision to wear those heels – you must be at peace with your fate.
However, lip formulas are moving rapidly, and product developers are swiftly coming to your rescue. They have realised that there is an enormous grey space between wearing a pigmented lip formula that always feels like something is on the lips, and a “tinted lip balm”, which, let’s be real here, does practically nothing for one’s aesthetic.
I thought I would introduce you to some new formulas that truly are weightless, feel like nothing is on the lips, stay looking great the whole time, and most importantly, don’t hold back on the pigment.
First up, we have the new Tint Caresse Lip Tint from L’Oréal Paris, which is something they call a “Lip Cushion”. Everything is a cushion these days, n’est-ce pas? They claim this is a powder lipstick, which doesn’t sound that appealing, but my god is this product heaven. Bright, super shades, and a completely featherweight texture. The colour itself is contained in the cap of the formula, and is reached when you screw in the little sponge applicator, which is a great shape and allows you to apply a ton of colour precisely, or just pat it on for a little tint. The Lip Tints were designed to create the “gradient lip” that is super popular in Asia, but work superbly all over the lip as well. Since it is a matte powder, after all, all you need to do is put a little lip balm on before you apply, and you’re ready.
The colour stays for quite a while – it won’t stay through a meal, but will leave a pretty hint of a stain. Rather than going patchy or uneven as it disappears (and sticking to every available coffee cup), it stays uniform and pretty, and you can re-apply in a flash, as it is simply a doddle to do. Best of all, it is most affordable, and can also be used as a very pretty blush, so I’ve been keeping rather a few shades in my handbag at all times…
Next, we have a lovely product from Maybelline, which, depending on where you are, is either called the Colorsensational Lip Gradation, or the Lip Studio Color Blur Lip Pencil. Essentially, it is a high pigment pencil on one end, with a blurring sponge applicator on the end. The formula is supremely blendable, and just a few dabs of the colour are enough to cover the whole lip with a wash of very pretty colour with the applicator. Alternatively, you can build it up for a real punch of pigment, and sue the applicator to make sure it really has adhered to the lips. But again, totally weightless.
Lastly, we have a couple of formulas from the natural end of things. Kjaer Weis and RMS Beauty are two of the most thoughtfully designed, high-integrity brands out there. They are both all-organic and additive-free brands started by makeup artists, and are fairly high on the luxury spectrum. They each have a fairly pigmented cream lipstick/blush formula, which are truly beautiful. Tap on a little for a tinted wash, or build up the colour, they always feel comfortable and comforting, and don’t stay for so long that you have to start checking if they’ve strayed outside the borders, if you know what I mean. Again, commitment free!
